France's Xavier Carruggi is leading the charge towards the €850,000 first-place prize. Carruggi currently tops the leaderboard with 577,700 in chips.
Another Frenchman, start of day chip leader Guillaume Darcourt, also fared well today. He finished in the top 10 with 380,000.
Just squeaking onto the leaderboard in 10th place is American phenom Vanessa Selbst. She’s had success on both sides of the pond, winning a WSOP bracelet, back to back NAPT Mohegan Sun main events, and taking down the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event in Cannes last year.
She’ll be looking to improve on her only EPT cash so far, 136th place at EPT San Remo last season.
120 players will get paid in this event which means the bubble will likely break within the first level of play on Day 3.
Hanging on for dear life near the bottom of the chip counts are PokerStars SportsStar Boris Becker and Team PokerStars Pro Ivan Demidov.
Still in, and faring better, are famed online tournament player Mickey “mement_mori” Petersen, two-time EPT runner-up Martin Jacobson, Tobias Reinkemeier, David Sonelin and Team PokerStars Pros Alexander Kravchenko, Eugene Katchalov, Leo Fernandez, Victor Ramdin and Andre Akkari.
Among the 270-odd players who busted today we saw seven former EPT champions. Jason Mercier, Ronny Kaiser, Sebastian Ruthenberg, Arnaud Mattern, Kevin Stani and Kent Lundmark all hit the rail over the course of the day.
Here is a rundown of the top 10 chip counts going into Day 3.
1 Xavier Carruggi 577,700
2 Toni Pettersson 534,100
3 Martin Schleich 453,400
4 Saar Wilf 430,700
5 Raul Mestre 404,900
6 Dmitrij Fadeev 380,200
7 Guillaume Darcourt 380,100
8 Evgeny Zaytsev 368,300
9 Jose Marina 367,800
10 Vanessa Selbst 364,500
Action will continue from the Gran Casino Barcelona as the field is pared down closer to Thursday’s final table.
